Where is asbestos found in homes?

Asbestos was used widely in British building until it was banned outright in 1999. If your property or outbuildings are older than that, some may contain it.

Where asbestos hides

Usually lower risk if left alone

Garage and shed roofs, corrugated sheets, rainwater pipes, flue pipes and cement panels are usually asbestos cement. The fibres are bound in, so the risk is low unless the material is broken or worn badly.

Higher risk materials

Sprayed coatings, pipe and boiler lagging, insulating board in ceilings, around fire doors and in airing cupboards, and some old textured coatings are more likely to release fibres. These are often licensed work.

What to do

Leave it alone, do not drill, sand or scrub it, and take photos. If you are planning building work or the material is damaged, ask for advice before anything is disturbed.

Common questions

Is it dangerous to live with it?
Asbestos in good condition that is not disturbed is generally considered low risk. The danger is from breathing in fibres when material is damaged or worked on.
